The original Korg Opsix (often referred to as Mk1) is a 37-key "altered" FM synthesizer known for making complex FM synthesis accessible through an intuitive, color-coded interface and hands-on controls. It was released in late 2020. This is running the latest 3.1.2 firmware. This synthesizer is in mint condition; new models from Sweetwater sell for $750.
Yamaha developed the famous DX7 as a 6 operator FM (frequency modulation) synthesizer in 1982. This is a radically different approach to synthesis than subtractive analog like on a Moog or Oberheim. Because of the flexibility, a musician could create a wider variety of sounds than was possible on previous synthesizers. Yamaha milked the FM patents for 28 years while failing to improve the ugly and frustrating method for programming a synthesizer with up/down buttons and a 16 character 2 line display.
28 years later - after the patents had expired - Korg developed what they refer to as “altered FM synthesis” - giving the musician tons of hands-on tactile control over operators and modulators. This means if you don’t know what you’re doing it is still fun to program because you’re doing it with your hands and your ears, not staring at some tiny little screen. In addition, they modernized the experience by adding onboard effects, a sequencer, ring modulation, and a filter. While you can still play DX7 patches on this keyboard, why would you want to? This is hands-down one of the most fun keyboards I’ve ever played.
While the OpSix comes with 250 to 350 patches from the factory, I have loaded this with 500 patches and will include over 1000 sounds from commercial sound designers on a flash drive. The editor librarian is a free download from Korg. Note: the memory is limited to 500 patches on the keyboard itself.

User and Expert Opinions
Pros:
Reviewers on MusicRadar praise the Korg Opsix for being an accessible and inspiring take on FM synthesis.
The color-coded operator mixer with faders and knobs is a standout feature that significantly simplifies programming FM patches.
The synth is capable of creating a wide range of sounds beyond classic FM, functioning as a virtual analog or additive synth due to its multiple operator modes.
It includes a randomizer function that can generate new, unique sounds, which many find inspiring.
The unit is lightweight and portable.
I meet Craigslist buyers at the Wendy’s across from the University Park Mall. I’m also willing to bring this to the Notre Dame, St. Mary’s, Bethel, or IUSB campuses.
